Title: "Well Met"
Author: VooDoo Lily
Notes: AOTC AU fic. Corde POV. Comlink = telephone. Data recorder = answering machine.
Thanks for reading and reviews are appreciated!
Summary: Padme's and Obi-Wan's first meeting in ten years happens very differently from the AOTC film. This fic was inspired by and adapted from the book sequel to "Trainspotting."

The comlink was ringing when I entered the apartment I shared with Padmé. She was in the living room, busy working on her next speech for the Senate, and my hands were full with grocery bags, so we let the data recorder take the call. I had just set my bags down on the kitchen counter when I heard a man’s voice come on.

“Hello, Cordé. I hope you don’t mind me calling like this. I got your number from Bant, and I just wanted to apologize for leaving like I did last night. Something important came up.”

Only then did I recognize the voice as Obi-Wan Kenobi’s.

I had met him and his friend Anakin Skywalker last night at a restaurant through Bant, a mutual friend of ours. We had all had dinner with a group of people, and afterwards, the waiter had brought him the restaurant's comlink, saying he had a call. Obi-Wan had left the table to take his call, but never come back.

I picked up the apartment’s comlink.

“Hi, Obi-Wan. Oh, last night was no problem. Bant figured it was something urgent. So what are you doing now?” I saw Padmé looking at me with curiosity, and turned away for some more privacy.

“Nothing much. Just browsing the Archives at the Temple. What about you? Care for a drink?”

I’m not sure I want a drink, and I’m not sure I want Obi-Wan. His friend Anakin is much more my type. But inviting Obi-Wan over would give me a chance to learn more about his handsome young friend.

“I’m not in a cantina mood,” I begin, “but you can come round for a glass of wine if you’d like.”

“Sounds good.”

I give him my address, and then I hang up.

When Obi-Wan comes over, I am surprised, but not that surprised, to learn that he and Padmé know each other from way back. Galactic City can be like that sometimes, a place where everyone knows everybody else.

I pour the wine and try to find out some more about Anakin, but it’s obvious Padmé and Obi-Wan are only concerned with each other. Eventually, he asks her if she’d like to go to the holoplex.

“Sure,” she agrees. This surprises me. For weeks, she’s been working on her upcoming speech, and I know she’d intended to stay in tonight to go over another draft of it.

“Don’t you have that speech to finish?”

“It can wait,” she saya, giving me a meaningful look.

As Obi-Wan leaves to use the refresher, I make a face at Padmé.

“What?” she asks.

I wrap my arms around myself and pretend I’m making out with an imaginary person.

Padmé rolls her eyes at me, but there’s a smirk on her face.

Obi-Wan comes back, and they go.
