A Mother Knows
By kenobigirl66

“Oh God no!” A woman gasped breathlessly as labor pains wracked her body.

This was supposed to be a happy moment, but instead fear and dread filled her soul this night. Her husband looked at the door to her room,

then back at her. Sensing her anxiety, he softly stroked her cheek with the back of his hand. For he knew that on the other side of that

door lie his son’s new life.

“Push!” The medical attendant urged.

The man and his wife had made this decision, with much pain, when they had been informed of the child’s midichlorian count. They thought it

would be selfish not to allow their child the opportunity to reach his full potential. At this moment two humans, a male and a female, from

the Jedi order waited patiently in the hall for the arrival of the child. They had brought everything they would need to care for an infant. The

only thing which was to be given to the child from its family was a name.

“Last push, you’re doing great, I can see the baby’s head!” And with a deep breath and a yelp, a new life had entered the galaxy.

“It’s a boy.”

The attendants looked the infant over, wiped him down and placed him on his mother’s chest screaming. The woman tilted her exhausted

head up and looked at this beautiful red miracle that had quieted and was now looking into her eyes. Large tears began to fall uninhibited

from her already puffy eyes. She ran her fingertips through the child’s down-like reddish blonde hair. Her husband placed an unsteady hand

on his newborn son’s head and gave him a name. The woman looked away with sorrow unable to bear the scene a minute longer, and with

that her youngest was taken from her.

It had been many years since his birth, but the memory remained fresh of the child she let go of that night. She had felt her heart

being ripped out and from it a small piece had been removed in those dark hours, and had remained with her now distant son. Though

painful it was, she’d had no way of knowing that this small piece would one day bring her comfort instead of sorrow, and relief instead of

pain. On this day, the puzzle would be completed using that missing piece to form a picture of her son, her baby, now a strong, handsome

man; a hero even. She looked at the image of this familiar stranger with wonder and a little confusion as the holonews described an

unnamed Jedi’s heroic deeds at the battle of Theed. The realization that all had not been lost swept over her. Her sacrifice had not been in

vein.

The rising of the sun on this new day had brought with it peace. She rose with her heart no longer heavy, but satisfied and complete.

The holonews might not have known the young man’s name, but she did. It was a name that just days ago, had it been mentioned, would

have caused her to go silent with pain and regret. However, from this moment forward his name would bring her joy--Obi-Wan Kenobi.

Her heart was made whole at the sight of her son. She had no question in her mind that it was her Obi-Wan. Somehow, a mother knows.
